Abstract

This book presents the results of a pilot study into the objectives of a permanent inventory for biomedical sciences and health care (MEDREP). The objectives of MEDREP are: to visualize trends in (bio)medical research in the EC Member States, to signalize any gaps and to prevent duplication of research; to further scientific contacts between researchers and to promote efficient planning of research projects by means of a systematic survey of projects; to provide a basis for co-ordination and planning of research at national level and to stimulate cooperation between the national bodies and institutions. The main parts of the pilot study were defined as follows: - design of a standard for the description of medical research projects and the pursuit to arrive at agreement on this matter between all EC Member States; - inventory of prerequisits and desirabilities regarding automation aspects; - advising the EC Member States in creating an infrastructure for a national inventory; - organization of the delivery of information; - examining the willingness of the EC Member States to contribute financially to the MEDREP data base; - preparatory activities to the implementation of the full data base subsequent to the pilot study.
