Abstract

The physical, chemical and biological characteristics of Lake Monate (Northern Italy) in 1969 - 1972 have been compared with those of 1978 - 1980. During the period 1969 - 1972 the phosphorus concentration and the phytoplankton population density were low and, consequently, this ecosystem has been classified as oligotrophic. This classification was also supported by the physical and chemical characteristics of the lake waters. After 1978 the phosphorus concentration increased, but the chlorophyll concentration did not vary. There is evidence that the phosphorus increase was an effect of the greater phosphorus loading from the human population living in the lake watershed; in fact, during the last 20 years the population increment was about 35%. The reasons why a higher concentration of chlorophyll did not follow the phosphorus increase are discussed.
