Abstract

The emissions of heavy metals by technical sources within the European Community are described, and an overview on technologies to reduce the air pollution is given. The concentrations of heavy metals in ambient air and in deposits in the Member States and in remote areas are summarized in more than 100 tables. From these data the ranges of air pollution by heavy metals are derived. Particle size distributions, solubility and volatility of the compounds are discussed, methods of measurement + sampling and analysis + are described. The transport of heavy metals in the atmosphere is described in the vicinity of an individual emission source and in a long range scale. The impact of heavy metals on human health and on the environment (soil, water, food) is reviewed. A priority of effects is given by the carcinogenicity of some heavy metals. Finally, strategies and recommendations to overcome air pollution by heavy metals are proposed.
