RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ON ENGINEERING CERAMICS AT THE JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES
Research on advanced ceramics, supported by the European Communities includes shared cost research of European programmes and ceramics R&D executed in its own Joint Research Centre. The paper briefly reviews the shared cost action programmes. It then focuses on the engineering ceramics programme at the Joint Research Centre. This programme includes processing research as well as extensive properties studies particularly in high temperature mechanical and corrosive environments. Typical results are presented from processing work on pressureless sintered silicon nitrides and sintered reaction bonded materials. Examples of corrosion behaviour of silicon nitrides in high temperature carburizing, oxidizing and sulphidizing atmospheres are given. Mechanical studies on some silicon nitrides including environmental effects are also presented. Collaborative aspects of this programme within the European ceramics community are indicated.
