Abstract

This progress report resumes the controlled thermonuclear fusion research activities carried out by the Fusion Department of the Italian Commission for Nuclear and Alternative Energy Sources (ENEA) during the period ending December 1985. ENEA's fusion research is fully integrated into the European fusion program. It follows the guidelines outlined in both the Community's five-year fusion program 1982 - 86, now extended by the new one of 1985 - 89, and in ENEA's general program 1985 - 89. The experimental and research work outlined in the following sections was performed by the Fusion Department for the most part at ENEA's Frascati Center, but with recourse to other ENEA Departments in the relevant areas. This report is structured on the Department's three major projects + Fusion Physics, Frascati Tokamak Upgrade, and Fusion Reactor Engineering + with the divisional project Inertial Confinement mentioned separately because of its particular scientific content.
