Abstract

acceleration in the presence of an intense electrostatic wave is observed in an Argon discharge plasma. Externally launched neutralized ion Bernstein waves and electrostatic ion cyclotron waves produce particle acceleration when the wave amplitude i above the threshold for intrinsic stochasticity. The ion distribution function is measured using laser induced fluorescence to observe Doppler broadening. The wave electric field is measured by probes and by the Doppler line shift of the wave induced E x B-o drift. The single particle, non-selfconsistent theory of stochastic acceleration is seen to adequately describe the results.
