Abstract

A pair of large superconducting coils has been proposed to generate longitudinal homogeneous fields for detector assemblies at future TeV accelerators. The study is based on the requirements of the ZUESS experiment at HERA-DESY, but is typical for the forthcoming class of experiments. The coil diameter is about 5 m and the required field on the detector (2.25 m long, 1.6 m diameter) is 1.5-1.8 T with a uniformity of a few percent. A large iron shell surrounds the experiment. A big effort has been made in designing the shape of the iron to demonstrate that the huge attractive force between the coils and the net shift force due to the longitudinal iron asymmetry can be drastically reduced. Two separate cryostats for the coils could then be constructed thus improving the system accessibility. Some details of the conductor and of the coils construction are also presented.
