EFFECTS OF PLASMA ROTATION ON BALLOONING MODES
The WKB method is used to develop equations for ballooning modes in rotating, axisymmetric plasmas. Earlier work**1 is extended to include arbitrary field aligned flows, as well as a rigid, toroidal rotation. Equilibria are computed by the fixed boundary code CLIO. Numerical results, for toroidal rotation velocities up to the sound speed, will be presented. In a cylindrical model, a generalized Suydam criterion shows local instability for sheared flows just below the speed of sound. The growth rates have been calculated numerically, and are typically very small.
