ANAEROBIC DIGESTION - RESULTS OF RESEARCH AND DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS - PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP HELD IN VILLENEUVE D'ASQ, (F) ON MARCH 4-6, 1986.
The Contractors meeting was organized jointly by the Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development and the Directorate-General for Energy of the Commission of the European Communities in the framework of the R $:20 D Programme in Recycling of Urban and Industrial Waste and the Demonstration Programme in the sector of Biomass and Energy from Waste. The meeting took place in Villeneuve d'Ascq (Lille), France, on the 4, 5 and 6 March 1986, at the INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agricole) centre. The numerous cost-shared contracts of the two programmes, some of which are completed while others are still continuing, have led to a considerable number of results at the laboratory, pilot and full size scale which need to be compared and discussed in order to evaluate, in an open and free discussion, the need for further activities at Community level, and to suggest guidelines for possible research, development and demonstration projects in the future. The papers presented by the EEC contractors, and by the invited speakers who drew the attention of the participants to the much broader problems of the applicability of the anaerobic digestion processes, demonstrated the interest that this technology still deserves, in spite of some disappointments at the industrial level and of the increasing difficulties of economic viability raised by the instability of oil prices. The present volume includes the full texts of the presentations and a summary report of the discussions. The editors express their gratitude to all who with their contributions and willingness have actively participated in the discussions, thus helping to chart the way ahead for the EEC's activity in this field.
