Abstract

The fluorescence lidar operated from aircraft allows a nearly synoptic investigation of extended areas of the sea which is particularly important if hydrographic conditions are changing rapidly in time, e.g. due to tides. Among the substances that are detectable with lidar, Gelbstoff (dissolved organic matter) gives rise to very dominant fluorescence signals. Due to its good stability this material can be used as a natural tracer for transport and mixing studies, and for the identification of characteristic water masses and frontal systems. Results obtained in the German Bight and in the Adriatic Sea are reported.
