Abstract

An introduction to the phenomenology of fatigue failure is given. The two types of test data which are currently obtained and used in engineering design and in the assessment of material performance, i.e. endurance data and crack growth data, are presented. Current practices in the design of fatigue loaded components and structures are related to these two types of test data. The occurrence of specific problems in the design of high temperature plant has, however, promoted the development of new concepts in fatigue testing. Some of these testing concepts such as time dependent cycle and thermal fatigue testing, are briefly reviewed.
