Abstract

The IRIMS (Ispra Risk Management Support) System is an attempt to integrate a number of data bases containing information relevant to risk management with several existing simulation models which can be used to address problems of environmental assessment, risk analysis and system optimisation. IRIMS has been implemented using modern methods of information management which allow the interconnection of modules and is interfaced to the user through high resolution colour graphics and "user- friendly" menus. This means that simulations can be rapidly set up and run by users who do not have specialised technical or computer backgrounds, and repeat runs of alternative scenarios can be quickly made. Graphical display of the results allows the user to obtain a "feel" for the problem under investigation and to concentrate his attention on the most significant aspects without being overwhelmed by too much detail. The present version of the IRIMS system is a demonstration prototype containing data bases for Chemical Substances; Industrial Accident Reports; Legislation and Regulations; Regional and Geographical information and Chemical Industry locations. The simulation models implemented are: Chemical Industry Analysis; Chemical Process Plant Analysis; Waste Treatment and Disposal; Industrial Waste Streams; Transportation Risk - Cost Analysis; Environmental Impact Assessment; Multicriteria Data Evaluation. The structure is open in that new modules can be added as they become necessary, and all new modules can, in principle, be interconnected with existing ones and have access to existing data bases. The system can be adapted to suit particular risk management applications while still being able to draw on information already available in the system. The paper will describe the prototype IRIMS system and discuss some of its potential applications.
