Abstract

The central computing service of the JRC-Ispra Establishment has had past involvements in the promotion of portability and coding conventions. Being conscious that users' recommendations are of little use if they are not enforced by automatic tools, the people providing user support service have been "Toolpack believers" since the launch of the Toolpack project. By contributing to prerelease testing they became "Toolpack supporters". From Toolpack believer to Toolpack supporter was a difficult working trip, mainly focused on the implementation of the TIECODE library and the support utilities TIEMAC, MKPFS and TEST under MVS/TSO. The first experimental use of Toolpack tools consisted of two steps. The former step produced the preliminary and modest users' impact, by reaching practical results from the application of the polish tools ISTPO and ISTPL. The latter one, based on ISTDS and ISTPT, achieved a precision transformation cycle to be compared with manufacturer provided alternatives. Some future plans are also highlighted, which imply the use of Toolpack tools with the intended goal of promoting software quality control.
