Abstract

The paper presents the last results of the studies on a brazed first wall concept under development at JRC-Ispra in collaboration with Ansaldo S.p.A. (Genova). According to this concept, a shell of stainless steel (AISI 316) brazed on a row of cooling tubes is the part facing the plasma of the boxes which envelope the blanket segments. The evaluation of the design concept and of the related technical aspects are described. Thermomechanical analyses of the complete first wall box indicate the design modifications required by the operational conditions. The brazing technique has been developed at Ansaldo laboratories, where specimens and prototypes with features similar to those of the full-scale NET boxes have been manufactured and characterized. Non-destructive (ultrasonic) and destructive tests have been carried out to verify the good quality of the brazing joints. The facility in construction at JRC-Ispra to pursue on larger first wall mock-ups the thermal fatigue test programme is finally described.
