Abstract

Nitrides have gained technological importance in the recent past. They are not only used in thin layers as diffusion barriers and coatings to improve corrosion or wear resistance, but they are also investigated and produced as bulk materials as "high technology ceramics" (Si-3N-4) and as promising fast breeder nuclear fuel (UN and (U,Pu)N). In particular for the latter, diffusion results are available including the effects of such parameters as deviation from stoichiometry, nitrogen partial pressure, impurities, radiation enhancement etc. Self-diffusion of both nitrogen and the metal atoms (U, Pu) will be discussed as well as diffusion of fission rare gases; knowledge of the latter is important to understand volume changes during operation (swelling). Other materials treated include Si-3N-4, ZrN and TiN. Experimental techniques and diffusion mechanisms will also be discussed.
