HOW TO CHARACTERIZE ENGINEERING SURFACES BY MEANS OF ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENTS
This is a lecture given in the framework of a two-day course organized by the Centro Italiano di Tribologia, which is part of the Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia, to which the author participates. We will present a summary on the different techniques which are used in the laboratories and in workshops to measure and characterize surface textures, and, particularly, to measure the surface parameters such as the different roughness figures. Roughness being important to define and prepare the mechanical surfaces in general. We will refer to a large number of books and to numerous illustrative figures. We will also describe the main types of roughness meter (or stylus instruments) which are normally used in practice, and explain the various numerical parameters which are attached to the concept of profile and roughness. The prices of the instruments will be indicated.
