Abstract

This publication contains the proceedings of a scientific meeting to review current information available on conventional and more intensive systems of pig rearing from a welfare point of view, to study ethological, physiological and health aspects from a welfare point of view, and to compare the relative economics of different intensive rearing systems for pigs and in the light of research conducted so far on pigs in cages and in flat deck systems. The conclusions indicate some main lines for future research. The meeting was financed by the Commission of the European Communities in the framework of the Community programme for the coordination of agricultural research.
