STABILIZATION OF VERTICAL POSITION AND CONTROL OF PLASMA SHAPE IN JET
The vertical position of the JET plasma is unstable without feedback stabilization. The growth rate can reach 150 s**-1 for strongly elongated plasmas with elongation ratio b/a = 1.8. A failure of the stabilization at large plasma current (-5 MA) can cause damage to the vessel due to large vertical forces unless the plasma elongation ratio is limited or additional vessel supports are provided. The paper outlines the shape control system and discusses the vertical instability and its stabilization.
