PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER GENERATION
The Commission of the European Communities (DG XII) is implementing a four-year (1985 - 1988) non-nuclear energy research and development programme for the development of renewable energy sources and in particular of solar energy. The solar energy R&D sub-programme covers two sectors of activity: solar energy applications in buildings and photovoltaic power generation. The latter is subdivided into two distinct parts: - R&D contracts on photovoltaic solar cells; - R&D contracts on photovoltaic systems and pilot projects. The present book provides an overview of the Commission's future activity in the R&D field of advanced photovoltaic cell technologies. Descriptions of the research programmes and preliminary results on the following two specific areas were presented at the first contractors' meeting: - Amorphous silicon solar cells (AMOR) - Action C.1 - the programme aims at new or improved preparation techniques with emphasis on efficiency, stability and low cost aspects; - Thin-film solar cells from alternative materials (ALTERNA) - Action C.2 - the aim being the development of high efficiency solar cells using alternative materials.
