Abstract

The energy principle of magnetohydrodynamics is derived in a fully holonomic form which makes self- adjointness obvious and higher order terms transparent. The special case of disturbances that keep the shape of the magnetic surfaces invariant is considered. Interchanges that require relaxing mhd constraints are admitted and interpreted as resistive interchange. The ensuing stability criterion is given.
