Abstract

This report gives the results of an international intercomparison of standards for the measurement of static differential pressures at high line pressures, organised under the auspices of the European Community's Bureau of Reference (BCR). Such measurements are of particular importance in the metering of natural gas in pipelines. The pilot laboratory was the National Physical Laboratory (United Kingdom) and the other participants were, in order of participation, the PhysikalischTechnische Bundesanstalt (Federal Republic of Germany), the Instituut voor Wertuigkundige Constructies (Netherlands), the Laboratoire National d'Essais (France), the Jydsk Teknologisk Institut (Denmark) and the Istituto di Metrologia "G. Colonetti" (Italy). Silicon diaphragm pressure transducers were used as the transfer standards and measurements were carried out for differential pressures in the range 0 to 150 kPa at line pressures of 4 and 8 MPa. The repeatability of the transfer standards was estimated to be better than f50.05%. At 4 MPa line pressure the difference between participants was within 0.25% at 30 kPa differential pressure and was within 0.13% in the differential pressure range 60 to 150 kPa. At 8 MPa the greatest difference was within 0.41% at 30 kPa and was within 0.23% in the range 60 to 150 kPa.
