Abstract

As part of the J.R.C. CILSS regional project "Surveying of natural renewable resources in the Sahel", a programme of UltraLightMotorised (ULM) radiometric measurements was performed in Mali in the Segou region, in November 1985. The measurement/data acquisition system, developed by the J.R.C., allows simultaneous collection of the spectral responses in the MSS and SPOT bands, exact measurement of the flight height to about 50 cm, colourvideo filming of the zone surveyed and the taking of aerial photographs. The data, which are recorded on video cassette during the flights, can be accessed in analogue and numerical form. Examination of the results obtained during this campaign shows that the ULM can effectively constitute a very high performance instrumentcarrying platform. Its potential also extends to aerial reconnaissance and to surveying operations of managed sites such as that of the rice growing perimeter of Tamani in the Mali. Obviously many improvements could be made to the system proposed by the J.R.C. if this type of instrument were to be used routinely. On the basis of this report the community of potential users should make comments on the suitability of the method in the surveying of natural resources in the Sahel area.
