Abstract

The Commission of the European Communities continues implementing a programme of research on the decommissioning of nuclear installations. The programme includes the development and testing in practice of advanced techniques for decommissioning activities such as decontamination and dismantling of redundant installations, and management of the radioactive waste arising therefrom. Among the advances achieved recently, the industrialscale demonstrations of new procedures for decontamination and recycling of steel are of particular importance, since these procedures make it possible to substantially reduce the radioactive waste volume.
