HIGH PRESSURE X-RAY ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY ON URANIUM COMPOUNDS
The LIII absorption edge of uranium was determined in U)P up to 43 GPa, in UC up to 40 GPa, and in UA12 up to 16 GPa. Pressure shifts the white line maximum to higher energy by 2.6 eV in the UP and by 2 eV in UC. These results are discussed in relation with the structural phase transitions that occur in the same pressure range, and with the delocalisation of the 5f electrons of uranium. No edge shift was observed in UA12 where a structural phase transition of a different type had been observed around 10 GPa.
