Abstract

A fast all-digital video code for high quality TV signal processing is described. Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) is employed, and the signal is differentially encoded into 6 bits/sample, with the use of an expanded nonlinear quantizer characteristic. This characteristic offers a fine structure for small differences between consecutive samples, as well as expanded outer levels for large differences, and is obtained from linear devices and a special quantisation algorithm. Therefore, the system can follow smooth changes in the video signal very faithfully, while at the same time it can immediately respond to the sharp (fast) edges. The all-digital design allows for high frequency operation (e.g.15 MHz), and makes the codec less sensitive, more compact and less expensive. System behaviour concerning the usual DPCM system impairments is very good. This code is destined for high quality digital video transmission in fast integrated services communication networks
