Abstract

The Technical Systems are composed of the following steps: - production of electricity at low cost (hydroelectricity) in sites a long way from the sites of use and separated from them by the sea; - production of gaseous hydrogen by electrolysis; - hydrogenation process of a liquid chemical substance with production of a liquid - storage of the hydrogenated liquid at site of production, transport of the liquid in conventional "product carrier" ships and storage to the site of hydrogen use or distribution; - dehydrogenation of the liquid with production of hydrogen and of a liquid substance to be transported to the site of origin in the same ships (voyage not "empty and in ballast"). Two systems of the same type are evaluated and compared from the techno-economic point of view using Benzene/Cyclohexane and Toluene/Methylcyclohexane respectively. The aim of the study is to verify the possibility of obtaining hydrogen in Europe at costs equal or lower than present European costs (H2 by electrolysis). The study also provides information on the economic (and environmental) consequences related to the advantages and disadvantages (due to the different physical characteristics) of the two chemical hydrogen carrying substances considered. The study is motivated by the activities in this field which have been carried out by an European Industrialists Consortium and in which the C.E.C. was involved
