Abstract

Within the activities of the EEC Concerted Research Project on "Identification and Characterization of Biological Tissues by NMR", carried out under the auspices of the Biomedical Engineering Group, EEC Committee on Medical and Public Health Research, a topical workshop was held on March 13/14, 1986 in Tuebingen, Germany, on "Safety Assessment of NMR Clinical Equipment". Main objective of the workshop was discussion of various aspects of safety of NMR exposure, exchange of information on hazards of NMR trials, and on the effects registered on patients and volunteers. Similarly, the development of appropriate test equipment was discussed to ensure that NMR instrumentation is performing within specification as far as safety is concerned. Main topics were: Tissue temperature measurement and power deposition in clinical NMR applications, relationship between changing B and induced electrical and physiological effects, aspects of site planning and safety precautions, measurement of radiofrequency fields in view of safety, as well as a survey of the current literature
