Abstract

This paper describes the use of the Abnormal Occurrences Reporting System (AORS) of the Commission of the European Communities for PRA/PSAs of nuclear power plants, in particular during the modelisation phase of such study. The AORS contains homogenised information on safety related events from various countries (France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and the U.S.A.), covering about 780 reactor years of operation. A semi- automatic procedure is presented for retrieving the observed paths leading (potentially) to a pre-specified top event, e.g. the failure of an emergency system. This procedure is based on the feature that renders the AORS to a unique system among the international safety related event databases, namely the storage of causal sequences extracted from each event report. It supports the PSA analyst in improving the degree of completeness of the system-, subsystem- and component models, system interactions and operator behaviour models by exploiting efficiently the large amount of operating experience available to date
