Abstract

Since June 1983, the machine has been progressively run up to its full design performance, the toroidal field magnet used routinely at maximum field and pulse duration, plasma current and position control optimized, and shape control successfully introduced. Now operational for nearly 3 years JET shows sound technical behaviour concerning physics results in the ohmic heating conditions, JET exceeded expectations, allowing a fusion product n-i x tau-E x T-i = 0.5 x 10**20 m**-3 x s x keV, to be reached. Moreover, JET's design allows new programme orientations and operation scenarios to be implemented without affecting the basic structure, e.g. operation with plasma currents in excess of 5 MA, X point operation, current profile control. The ultimate challenge for JET will be operation with tritium, the study of alpha particle behaviour and heating requires one to two years of operation with deuterium- tritium mixtures. Remote handling requirements have been incorporated in all components of the machine; remote handling tools and procedures are being developed. The tritium plant, operational in 1999, will operate in a closed loop and separate for re-use hydrogen isotopes from the gas mixtures coming from the machine. The active operation phase is the final stage of the JET operation programme.
