Abstract

The EEC Joint Research Centre at Ispra are conducting fatigue tests on 1/5th scale models of PWR primary vessel, in the frame of the Primary Circuit Component Lifetime Prediction Project - Acoustic emission measurements were made during hydrotests and fatigue cycling: continuously by JRC and CISE, periodically by UKAEA. Some significant sources were detected and correctly located, also through the thickness. The fatigue propagation of a near the cladding microdefect (which gave some clear events during the first hydrotest) was clearly detected only during the last 30,000 cycles preceding the leak.
