POSSIBILITA' E PROSPETTIVE DELL'ANALISI PER RADIOATTIVAZIONE NEUTRONICA E DELLA SPETTROMETRIA DI MASSA NEL MONITORAGGIO DI OLIGOELEMENTI NEI TESSUTI E FLUIDI BIOLOGICI
The monitoring of trace metals in human tissues and body fluids is of fundamental importance for the diagnosis and treatment of metal-related diseases. This requires the use of highly sensitive and reliable analytical techniques to determine trace metal levels which are often of the order of ppb or less. This paper reports the use of neutron activation analysis and mass spectrometry for (i) the multi-element and accurate microanalysis of trace metals in tissues and body fluids (ii) as reference techniques for the development of traditional methods of routine analysis such as atomic absorption spectrometry (iii) in research related to the analytical quality controls including sampling, handling and storage of samples (iv) in metabolic studies of trace metals including possible synergistic effects.
