VALIDITA ECOLOGICA DELLA LOTTA INTEGRATA CONTRO GLI ORGANISMI NOCIVI
The problem of the protection of the environment against the degradation which man himself causes because of incorrect actions directed against what he perceives as harmful influences, emerges more seriously every day. The indiscriminate use of materials and means which do not respect the ecosystems and the natural equilibria between the communities of organisms living in them, has led to undesirable secondary effects and has made the search for adequate solutions urgent. The problem of control against harmful organisms in competition with man in the man-made environment and in the agricultural-forest environment is examined with a brief mention of recent serious consequences of inauspicious actions, showing the ecological validity of "integrated pest control". This is defined correctly and the fundamental elements on which it is based (units for intervention, existing communities, economic intervention thresholds, the environment's capacity for self-defence, use of the diverse and selective methods and means) are indicated and analysed. The need to have recourse to polyvalent intervention strategies stems from the realization of the dangers of the sole use, which is still too widespread, of broad- spectrum and non-selective chemical pesticides which leave persistent toxic residues. A detailed description will be given and a review prescribed of the main methods which can be used with respect to the ecosystems, dividing them into biological (use of natural antagonists, of bio pesticides, of hypovirulent stocks), genetic (application of the sterile insect technique, of hereditary sterility, of the replacement of population), cultural (recourse to resistant cultivars, to new agricultural practices, and to selective interventions), biotechnical (use of natural physical, chemical and biological substances, such as attractants, growth regulators, etc.), and chemical (use of chemical products with high selectivity and rapid degradability). With suitable control strategies which can be applied case by case on the stock of the elements of evaluation for correct application and with the use of specific means which respect the environment, the use of "integrated pest control" allows a justified faith in a more serene mode of life.
