Abstract

The book provides a summary of available information on the occurrence, distribution and status of species in the Community as a whole. It therefore provides an essential basis for conservation planning and the safeguard of species and habitat in the Community. The greater part of the two volume book provides comprehensive data sheets on individual threatened species including: 82 endangered plants (in addition to listing a further 1393 rare and threatened plants), 47 threatened freshwater fishes, 32 threatened and rare amphibians and reptiles, 53 threatened and rare birds (in addition to the 74 birds listed in Annex I of the EEC "Birds Directive"), 31 bats and 33 threatened terrestrial mammals. Part I of the book provides, as an executive summary, a resume on each major faunal group on the content of the data sheets and including the identification of the major threats to them. It also lists recommendations for conservation measures to be taken. These recommendations are addressed to all levels of interest including governments as statements of essential action necessary to protect and conserve the species in the Community as a whole.
