Abstract

We describe the preliminary measurements of a very efficient high-power 16 mum radiation source, based upon the effect of stimulated Raman Scattering in cooled (77 degrees K) parahydrogen. In our laboratory, in collaboration with CISE, we have built a CO-2 Laser chain able to supply about 30 MW (TEMoo) and designed suitable multipass cell (25 passes) to enhance the Raman gain. So we have obtained a 16 mum pulses of about 1.3 J/50 ns very stable and also Antistokes emission lines of about 50 mJ/50 ns around 7 mum were detected. Other effects as pulse compression and polarization enhancement have been observed.
