Abstract

HF generators ordered for ICRH heating of Tore Supra will provide the capability of operating at 120 MHz, allowing for harmonic heating of hydrogen plasma with a magnetic field around 4 teslas. Both high frequency and large TS port (LxH = 60x70 cm) make possible the use of waveguide as a coupling structure. Here we present a study for an all-metal ridged waveguide. First we evaluate the coupling with plasma, taking into account a realistic plasma model and the presence of a perfect Faraday shield to select the fast wave polarization. The coupling capability compares favourably with that of a loop antenna of similar dimensions (more than 4 MW for a maximum electric field of 10 kV/cm). To increase the power capability for a given voltage, we consider next a slightly different waveguide with lower characteristic impedance and cut-off frequency. As it is not standard, we study its electrical properties on a 1:3 scale model. Cut-off frequency as low as 70 MHz and characteristic impedance near 50 ohms at 120 MHz can be expected.
