Abstract

During the last couple of years semiconductors for direct switching on and off dc currents - mainly transistors and Gate-Turn-Off thyristors (GTOs) - promoted the technique of switched mode power supplies up to the MegaWatt range. The paper presents the main characteristics of this "key" technology for power supplies. Figures for typical performance and limits are given. The second part discusses the application of such power supplies for Fusion experiments. The last part shows possible spin-offs for the described technology arising from the fusion type application as for instance gaining experience with pulsed loads.
