Abstract

Titanium getter pumps will be used for the pumping of H-2 or D-2 gas on the neutral beam lines for TORE SUPRA. This choice is based on several reasons. Firstly, the pumping speed of these pumps is comparable to the speed of geometrically equivalent cryopumps while the costs of operation of the pump are considerably reduced. Furthermore, it has been found that at a temperature of 350 degrees to 400 degrees C the Ti layers can be outgassed, so the Titanium can be used with a very high efficiency. We report here the results obtained on a prototype pump, made up of two half-cylinders. The pump is opened during the pumping phase and closed for the evaporation of the Titanium and for regeneration of the layer.
