Abstract

THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EUROPEAN FUSION PROGRAMME THE RFX PROJECT HAS TO EXPLORE THE REACTOR PERSPECTIVES OF THE TOROIDAL MAGNETIC CONFINEMENT IN THE REVERSED FIELD PINCH (RFP) CONFIGURATION. THE PECULIAR DISTRIBUTION OF THE MAGNETIC ENERGY IN RFP CORRESPONDS TO A QUASI-MINIMUM ESTATE AND ALLOWS OPERATION WITH HIGH OHMIC HEATING CURRENTS AT SAFETY FACTORS Q 1 AND STABLE CONFINEMENT WITH BETA ABOUT 0.1. SEVERAL EXPERIMENTS IN EUROPE, USA AND JAPAN HAVE BEEN OPERATING AFTER 1979, WHEN ETA- BETA IN PADOVA DEMOSTRATED "QUIESCENT" PLASMA BEHAVIOUR IN A SMALL SIZE DEVICE. THEY ALLOWED TO UNDERSTAND MANY ASPECTS OF THE RFP PHYSICS AND TO DEDUCE BASIC SCALING LAWS WHICH SUPPORT THE EXPECTED PERFORMANCES OF RFX: WITH A MAJOR RADIUS OF 2 M, A MINOR RADIUS OF 0.5 M AND A PLASMA CURRENT OF 2 MA, AT DENSITY OF ABOUT 1020 M3, A TEMPERATURE ON AXIS OF ABOUT 1 KEV AND A CONFINEMENT TIME OF THE ORDER OF SOME TENS OF MS SHOULD BE OBSERVED. THE PAPER SUMMARIZES SOME OF THE RELEVANT EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND GIVES AN OVERVIEW OF THE STATUS OF RFX DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WITH EMPHASIS TO THOSE DETAILS ARE PECULIAR OF RFP"
