PRECALCULATIONS WITH SIMMER OF AN IN-PILE EXPERIMENT INVOLVING A BOILING FUEL POOL
The SCARABEE-N series of in-pile tests, designed to investigate the response of a LMFBR subassembly and of its neighbours to a mismatch between power generation and cooling, is a source of many interesting thermal, mechanical and hydraulic problems. This paper describes thermohydraulic pre-calculations performed with the SIMMER code for the boiling fuel pool test BF2. The calculations indicate that the liquid fuel will boil in a "bumpy" fashion, depositing fuel upon the walls as a thickening crust at each bump. Significant fuel vapour generation is also predicted leading to crust formation in the upper portion of the crucible and to a relatively small temperature difference between the hottest and coldest points within the crucible.
