Abstract

In the popular upwinded first-order Eulerian schemes for two-phase flow using a straggered mesh (Harlow and Amsden, Ransom et al.) there is some ambiguity as to the correct choice of numerical approximation for the pressure gradient term in the momentum equations, particularly for flows in conduits with non-constant cross-sections. In this paper the matter is investigated and an approximation is proposed which eliminates the unphysical consequences of the formulations of the pressure term in certain existing codes. The validity of the approximation is shown by numerical examples.
