Abstract

This paper describes numerical calculations on elongated and shaped equilibria in the proposed TCV tokamak. Ideal MHD axisymmetric stability properties of these equilibria are analyzed and, in particular, the effects of plasma elongation, current peaking, plasma-wall distance and shape variation are studied. Results of resistive MHD evolution calculations, simulating the startup phase of an elongated tokamak and including the interaction of the plasma with the poloidal field coils and with the vacuum vessel, are also presented.
