INCREASING THE USE OF CEREALS IN LIVESTOCK FEEDING
This publication constitutes a collection of scientific papers on the subject of "increasing the use of cereals in livestock feeding' presented and discussed during a symposium held in Brussels on 15 and 16 October 1986, organized by the Directorate General for Agriculture of the Commission of the European Communities as part of the research programmes on plant productivity and animal husbandry; the results obtained in these programmes provide a good basis for some remedial action on the cereal surpluses. Indeed, a certain amount of progress has been made in plant breeding, and compound feeds can be formulated to provide the necessary levels of energy, protein and fibre. At the same time, in examining the technical possibilities for improving the husbandry systems for monogastric and ruminant animals, it is clearly necessary to assess the economics of using more cereals while simultaneously avoiding the production of other surpluses which are already problems for the Community.
