ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH AT JRC ISPRA
In order to cope with the requirements of advanced software development in its institutional application areas, JRC has established an AI laboratory. The activity in this laboratory has been subdivided into two different lines. The first line pursued in collaboration with the Universita Statale di Milano (Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Informazione) is devoted to basic research in the domain of both knowledge representation and reasoning, and artificial reality. The second line, of institutional character, is focused on the development of large-scale applications of knowledge base systems. Two application projects are at present in progress: ChEM, a cooperating suite of knowledge bases and mathematical models for the management of the chemical emergencies generated by chemical accidents, and NEXTSIM, an AI based simulation environment for the design and evaluation of safeguard systems. The nature of the above applications is such that inputs from the basic research line are continuously needed, so the integration between the two types of activity is assured.
