CALCULATIONAL METHODS FOR DIFFUSIONAL GAS RELEASE
An investigation of efficient numerical techniques used to solve the diffusion equation for fission gas in a spherical fuel grain is reported. Random fuel operating histories were generated and the errors inherent in each algorithm evaluated for over 30,000 timesteps. The study has allowed the relative accuracy of the algorithms to be established over the whole range of their possible use. It is found that the AERE algorithm provides the most accurate solution over the greatest range of applicability. In the particular case of low gas releases (less than 10%), the URGAS algorithm is the most acceptable of those examined.
