Abstract

The book begins with a background description and analysis of national and regional trends in service employment. Employment growth in services between 1971 and 1984 using the 1980 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) are examined, providing some indication of those service sectors which may have a major impact on locational trends within UK services. Locational change in UK service employment are analysed and some of the major spatial trends in service employment over time are identified, suggesting some aggregate, macro-scale influences which may be involved in these changes. The second part of the book attempts to provide an explanation for some of the main shifts and prospective trends in the economic development and location of service activity in the UK.
