THE CERTIFICATION OF THE FATTY ACID PROFILE OF TWO EDIBLE OIL AND FAT MATERIALS
This report describes the preparation of two lipid reference materials (CRM 162: Soya-maize oil blend and CRM 163: Beef-pig fat blend) and the certification of their fatty acid profiles. The materials contain added antioxidant and are provided in dark glass ampoules, sealed under nitrogen gas. Full details of long-term stability trials are presented. Certification of the fatty acid profiles (expressed in terms of the methyl esters) was performed by 13 European laboratories which employed a variety of methods to prepare the methyl esters and a wide range of GLC conditions. Particular care was taken to ensure independence of individual measurements and appropriate calibration. These CRMs provide a convenient means of calibrating or checking analytical methods used for fatty acid profile analysis. Details are also given of the minor fatty acids detected in the study allowing the CRMs to assist in the identification of unknown peaks in a chromatogram.
