Abstract

According to a survey presented at the Fourth European Symposium on Organic Micropollutants in Water'', there are 27 compounds, among the 129 priority pollutants on the EC list, for which analytical methods do not seem to be available. The reports give special attention to these compounds while other toxic and persistent organic substances not belonging to the EC list, are marginally discussed. It was found that solutions for handling highly toxic chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans should be elaborated through special activities, like dioxin conferences etc. New analytical techniques, should be explored. However, as the amount of experience and available laboratory equipment varies between the laboratories involved, cost vs benefit of specific methods should be analyzed. Methods based on standard laboratory instruments, e.g. gas- and liquid- chromatography, seem to be most appropriate.
