EUROPEAN ACTIVITIES TOWARDS THE INTEGRATION AND HARMONISATION OF MATERIALS DATA SYSTEMS
The EC Commission's present 5-Year Programme for the Development of the Specialized Information Market in Europe (1984-88) aims at improving the market conditions for information services to ensure their commercial viability and at developing new specialized information products. A number of priority areas have been defined, such as the Factual Materials Databanks whose Materials Databank Demonstrator Programme will allow the joint demonstration of a number of European on- line databanks in a pilot network accessible in all member countries of the EC. A Central User Guidance System in development will facilitate database location, access, and searching, as well as translation support. As, by their origin, the participating databanks are heterogeneous in structure, operational features and language, the Demonstrator Programme involves harmonisation of the operational, linguistic and terminological issues of the system. These projects present an important contribution to the present international activities on standardisation for materials data systems. A Code of Practice harmonising the operational features of the databases joining the Demonstrator Programme has been developed and implemented. A multilingual Terminology Project collects terms and definitions used by the cooperating databases with the scope of establishing a multilingual dictionary containing about 2000 concepts, referring to international standards as far as possible.
