Abstract

A high-speed communication link between mini- and microcomputers connected to an Ethernet and an IBM 4381 under MVS has been installed. This link consists of a FIBRONICS K200 control unit supported by the KNET/MVS software and additional hardware and software interfaces for the mini- and microcomputers (at present mainly IBM or compatible PCs and DEC Micro VAX II systems). The K200 is on one side attached to an IBM multiplexer channel and on the other side to the Ethernet and can exchange data at a rate of 2.5 Mbit/s. In combination with the K200 the KNET/MVS software provides high-speed file transfers and virtual terminal connections between the IBM mainframe and the mini- and microcomputers on the network. KNET implements the ARPAnet TCP/IP protocol. The hardware and software products used for the communication system and performance data for the file transfers are described.
