Abstract

An international intercomparison of inductance standards was carried out by the national metrological institutes of Belgium (BMS), Federal Republic of Germany (PTB), France (LCIE), Italy (IENGF), Netherlands (VSL) and United Kingdom (NPL). Standard inductors of the General Radio 1482 type with nominal values of 1 H, 10 mH and 100 muH were measured at various frequencies in the range from 60 Hz to 5 kHz. The travelling standards showed an almost linear drift rate of a few parts in 105 per year, which is adequate for this intercomparison. Temperature variations of between 8 circC and 31 circC during transport did not cause any measurable effect. Although there was a great diversity of measuring methods, e.g. Maxwell bridge, impedance bridge, LC bridge and resonant bridge, the measured values of the 1 H and 10 mH standards agree at all frequencies within pm0.01%. For the 100 muH standard the results of 1 kHz also agree within pm0.01%, but at frequencies near the limits of the range, at 200 Hz and 5 kHz, deviations increase up to 0.06%. These uncertainties meet the present industrial requirements.
